Early Autumn Breezes and the Temple of Beckoning Cats: A Visit to Gotokuji, Setagaya

Many of our international guests at the hotel often tell us, “It was such a wonderful place to visit!”

Today, let’s explore the historic Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya.

■ A Peaceful Sanctuary Embracing the Seasons

Gotokuji is a lush, hidden gem where you can truly feel the beauty of changing seasons

In September, the grounds are filled with vibrant green maple leaves (Aomoji), quietly preparing for their brilliant red autumn transformation.

From mid-September, delicate red spider lilies (Higanbana) bloom around the base of the trees, adding a striking pop of color unique to early autumn. Why not take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful stroll in the cool autumn breeze?

■ The Origin & History of Maneki-neko (Beckoning Cat)

Did you know that Gotokuji is known as the birthplace of the world-famous “Maneki-neko” (beckoning cat)?

Back in the early Edo period, a feudal lord named Naotaka Ii was passing by after falconry when he noticed the temple’s white cat gesturing as if inviting him inside. The moment he stepped under the roof to rest, a sudden storm hit! Overjoyed to have avoided the heavy rain and lightning thanks to the cat, he generously restored the temple as his family’s patron temple. To honor this wise cat, the Shofukuden hall was built, enshrining the cat as a bringer of good fortune

■ Seas of Lucky Cats & Fun Hidden Details

At the shrine’s display area, you’ll find countless white cat figurines placed by visitors whose wishes came true—a truly breathtaking sight!

Interestingly, the cats at Gotokuji do not hold a gold coin (Koban) like typical lucky cats. This carries a thoughtful meaning: “The cat gives you the opportunity or connection (En), but bringing happiness out of it is up to you.”

Also, take a close look at the wooden carvings on the three-story pagoda—you might just spot a few “hidden cats” tucked away among the designs!
